In the Orthodox Christian tradition, the Feast of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker shines as one of the most beloved winter celebrations. For centuries, the Church has honored the holy bishop of Myra not only as a miracle-worker, but as a living icon of Christlike compassion - a shepherd who defended the innocent, protected the weak, rescued the oppressed, and quietly placed gifts into the hands of those in need.
Saint Nicholas teaches us that true giving is a sacrament, a way of revealing the mercy of God to His suffering people. To give - especially to a child - is to imitate the tenderness of Christ Himself. In the Orthodox Church, charity is never merely humanitarian. It is liturgical. It is our worship “after the Liturgy,” the continuation of the Eucharist with our hands and hearts.
Today, in the midst of war, destruction, and grief, this sacred calling has taken on new urgency. And through the loving hands of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, God continues to extend His mercy to the youngest and most vulnerable victims of Russia’s ongoing aggression - the children of Ukraine.
“Very soon Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker will visit us,” writes His Eminence Metropolitan Serhii from the war-torn Donetsk region. “It is a feast eagerly awaited by thousands of children. Almost every day, we continue purchasing gifts for our little displaced ones - among them children who lost a mother or father on the front.”
There is no heavier price than the one these children have paid. They have buried parents who died defending Ukraine. They have fled homes swallowed by flames. They live with fear, trauma, and uncertainty that no young heart should ever know.
“And so,” Metropolitan Serhii continues, “our task today is to bring these children a little light, warmth, and a sense of celebration. Our goal is to greet and bring joy to 3,000 children.”
This mission has become possible only because of the compassion of countless faithful who join this holy work - and, as the Metropolitan writes, through the tireless involvement of “His Eminence Archbishop Daniel and the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, whose sincere hearts and constant support are a true blessing for our children and communities.”
Together with volunteers, clergy, and parish workers, the Church in eastern Ukraine visits families whose lives have been shattered. Many are raising children with disabilities - boys and girls bound to wheelchairs, functional beds, or struggling with chronic conditions intensified by the horrors of war.
“If anyone wishes to see truly holy people in this life,” Metropolitan Serhii writes with tenderness, “look at the mothers who raise these children alone. These are women before whom one wants to bow one’s head deeply.”
With the support of the UOC of the USA, volunteers deliver food packages, medicines, fruit, and sweet gifts purchased with love by American faithful who refuse to abandon Ukrainian families in their darkest hour.
In every village and every city, volunteers encounter the same heartbreaking scenes: parents who once lived ordinary lives now must choose between rent and bread. Children who once laughed freely now tremble at air raid sirens and drones. Young hearts wonder why Saint Nicholas may not visit them this year.
“How can a parent explain to a child that this year Saint Nicholas will not bring anything?” the Metropolitan asks.
Such questions pierce the soul. And this is why the Church must be present - why the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has become, in the words of those receiving aid, “the hands of God Himself.”
From Konstyantynivka, where rockets, drones, and shelling thunder daily, Fr. Konstyantyn Kuznetsov, dean of the Donbas Deanery, writes: “Together with my wife Natalia, we continue delivering sweet gifts - apples, tangerines, and food sets - to large families. There are many children, and we want to greet as many young Ukrainians as possible before their favorite feast.”
These children live on the shifting edge of the frontline. Their schools are closed or bombed. Their playgrounds are mined or destroyed. Their drawings, their toys, their small joys are overshadowed by fear. “They are children of war,” Fr. Constantine writes. “This phrase will accompany them forever.”
And yet, when volunteers arrive with even the simplest gifts - a book, a gingerbread cookie, a tangerine - a spark of childhood returns.
“We wanted to bring them warmth, a smile, and good cheer,” he shares. “We are immensely grateful to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA for this blessed work, for its great love, for its goodness, for the warmth and sincerity of its heart!”
At the rehabilitation center Planet of Childhood, the smallest and most fragile Ukrainian children gather - those with autism, cerebral palsy, deafness, developmental delays, trauma-related disorders, and genetic conditions. Some are IDPs. Some have fathers defending Ukraine. Some have fathers who have already died.
And yet in this small refuge there is laughter, light, and hope.
“We brought sweet gifts,” volunteers write. “The children greeted us joyfully, each one shining with bright eyes. Here every child receives special love, care, and attention.”
This year, the Church is delivering gifts not only in person but also through Nova Poshta, sending packages to children across multiple regions so even those isolated by war may feel remembered.
In Orthodox Christianity, almsgiving is not optional - it is the beating heart of the Gospel.
Saint John Chrysostom teaches that “The poor are the altar of Christ.”
Saint Basil the Great reminds us that “A gift to the suffering is a gift to God Himself.”
And Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker became the patron of children precisely because his compassion revealed the face of Christ.
To give to a child - especially a suffering child - is to enter into the mystery of divine love.
Today, the UOC of the USA continues this tradition with faithfulness, humility, and unshakeable devotion. Through their generosity, thousands of Ukrainian children will open gifts, taste something sweet, hold a book, or simply smile - perhaps for the first time in months.

In this sacred season - in this land wounded by war - you can become a Helper of Saint Nicholas.
You can place a gift into the hands of a child who lost a father. You can bring warmth to a mother who cries at night. You can restore hope to a little one who fears the sky. You can become the miracle that reminds a child: “God has not forgotten me.”
Together - truly together - we can give them a miracle.
Together, with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, we can be the hands of God in a suffering land.
May the Lord bless you for every kindness, for every prayer, for every offering.

Руки Божі у Час Війни: Українська Православна Церква США приносить світло Святого Миколая стражденним дітям України
В православній християнській традиції свято Святителя Миколая Чудотворця сяє як одне з найулюбленіших зимових торжеств. Протягом століть Церква вшановує святого владику Мир Лікійських не лише як чудотворця, але як живу ікону Христового милосердя - пастиря, який захищав невинних, підтримував слабких, визволяв пригнічених і непомітно клав дари в руки тих, хто потребує допомоги.
Святий Миколай навчає нас, що правдивий дар - це таїнство, спосіб явити милість Божу Його стражденному народові. Дарувати - особливо дитині - означає наслідувати ніжність Самого Христа. В Православній Церкві милосердя - це не просто гуманітарність. Це літургійний акт. Це наше богослужіння “після Літургії”, продовження Євхаристії нашими руками і серцями.
Сьогодні, серед війни, руйнувань та сліз, це святе покликання набуває особливої гостроти. І через люблячі руки Української Православної Церкви США Господь продовжує простягати Свою милість до наймолодших і найвразливіших жертв російської агресії - дітей України.
“Дуже скоро до нас завітає Святий Миколай Чудотворець,” - пише Його Високопреосвященство Митрополит Сергій (Православнв Церква України) із розтерзаної війною Донеччини. “Це свято, якого з нетерпінням чекають тисячі дітей. Майже щодня ми продовжуємо закуповувати подарунки для наших маленьких переселенців - серед них діти, які втратили маму чи тата на фронті.”
Немає важчої ціни, ніж та, яку заплатили ці діти. Вони поховали батьків, що полягли за Україну. Вони тікали з домівок, охоплених полум’ям. Вони живуть зі страхом, травмою і невизначеністю, якої не повинно знати жодне дитяче серце.
“Тому,” - продовжує Владика Сергій, - “наше завдання сьогодні - принести цим дітям хоча б трохи світла, тепла і відчуття свята. Наша мета - привітати та подарувати радість 3 000 дітям.”
Ця місія стала можливою лише завдяки співчуттю численних вірян, які приєднуються до цієї святої справи - і, як зазначає митрополит, завдяки невтомній участі “Високопреосвященного Архієпископа Данила та вірних Української Православної Церкви США, чиї щирі серця та постійна підтримка є справжнім благословенням для наших дітей і громад.”
Разом із волонтерами, духовенством та церковними працівниками Церква на сході України відвідує родини, чиє життя зруйноване війною. Багато з них виховують дітей з інвалідністю - хлопчиків і дівчаток, прикутих до візочків чи функціональних ліжок, або тих, хто бореться з хронічними недугами, загостреними воєнними реаліями.
“Якщо хтось хоче побачити святих у цьому житті,” - з ніжністю пише митрополит Сергій, - “нехай гляне на матерів, які самотужки виховують цих дітей. Це жінки, перед якими хочеться низько схилити голову.”
За підтримки УПЦ США волонтери доставляють продуктові набори, ліки, фрукти та солодкі дарунки - куплені з любов’ю американськими вірянами, які відмовляються залишити українські родини в їх найважчу годину.
У кожному селі й місті волонтери бачать однакову трагедію: Батьки, що колись жили звичайним життям, тепер мусять обирати між хлібом і орендою. Діти, які колись сміялися, тепер здригаються від сирен і дронів. Маленькі серця запитують, чому Святий Миколай може не прийти цього року.
“Як пояснити дитині, що цього року Святий Миколай нічого не принесе?” - запитує митрополит. Ці слова пронизують душу. Саме тому Церква повинна бути поруч. Саме тому УПЦ США стала, у словах тих, хто отримує допомогу, “руками Самого Бога”.
Із Костянтинівки, де щодня лунають ракети, дрони та артилерія, протоієрей Костянтин Кузнєцов, декан Донбаського благочиння, пише: “Разом із дружиною Наталією ми продовжуємо розвозити солодкі подарунки, яблука, мандарини та продуктові набори багатодітним родинам. Дітей багато, і ми хочемо привітати якнайбільше маленьких українців до їхнього улюбленого свята.”
Ці діти живуть на рухомому краї фронту. Школи закриті або зруйновані. Майданчики заміновані або розбиті.Дитячі малюнки, іграшки та мрії затьмарені страхом.
“Вони - діти війни,” - пише отець. - “Це словосполучення буде з ними назавжди.” І все ж, коли волонтери приносять навіть найменший подарунок - книжечку, пряник, мандаринку - дитинство повертається.
У реабілітаційному центрі Планета дитинства збираються найвразливіші діти України - з аутизмом, ДЦП, глухотою, затримками розвитку, психологічними травмами та генетичними порушеннями. Тут є переселенці. Є діти захисників. Є діти, чиї батьки вже загинули. І все ж тут - сміх, світло, надія.
“Ми привезли солодкі подарунки,” - пишуть волонтери. - “Діти зустріли нас радісно, з сяючими очима. Тут кожній дитині дарують особливу любов, турботу і професійний догляд.”
Цього року подарунки доставляються не лише особисто - Новою Поштою розсилаються пакунки, щоб навіть діти в ізольованих селах відчули, що їх пам’ятають.
В Православ’ї милостиня не є вибором - це пульс Євангелія.
Святий Іоан Золотоустий навчає: “Бідні - це жертовник Христа.”
Святий Василій Великий нагадує: “Дар стражденним - це дар Самому Богові.”
А Святий Миколай став покровителем дітей саме тому, що в кожній дитині бачив лик Христа.
Дарувати стражденній дитині - означає торкатися тайни Божої любові.
Сьогодні УПЦ США продовжує цю священну традицію з вірністю, смиренням і непохитною відданістю. Завдяки їхній щедрості тисячі українських дітей відкриють подарунки, спробують щось солодке, потримають книгу, чи просто усміхнуться — можливо, вперше за довгі місяці.

У цей святий час - у країні, пораненій війною - Ви можете стати Помічником Святого Миколая.
Ти можеш покласти подарунок у руки дитини, яка втратила батька. Ти можеш принести тепло матері, що плаче ночами. Ти можеш повернути надію малюкові, який боїться неба. Ти можеш стати чудом, яке прошепоче дитині:“Бог про тебе не забув.”
Твоя пожертва поставить хліб на стіл. Твоя доброта доставить подарунки на прифронтові території. Твоя любов понесе світло Христа тисячам українських дітей.
Разом - справді разом - ми можемо подарувати їм диво. Разом з Українською Православною Церквою США ми можемо бути руками Божими в стражденній землі.
Нехай Господь благословить тебе за кожну доброту, за кожну молитву, за кожну пожертву.
І нехай Святий Миколай випросить для тебе і твоєї родини ту радість, яку може дарувати лише жертовна любов.
