In the welcoming city of Krefeld, Germany, where many Ukrainian families have found refuge in recent years, the faithful of the Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox Parish gathered with deep anticipation and spiritual joy to welcome their archpastor and spiritual father, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora.

The parish, which has grown significantly in recent years due to the arrival of Ukrainian families displaced by the war following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has become a spiritual home for those seeking prayer, comfort, and a sense of belonging far from their native land. At the heart of this vibrant and growing community stands Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Soroka, the devoted pastor of the parish and Dean of the Western Deanery of the Western European Eparchy, whose tireless pastoral ministry has nurtured the faithful through times of sorrow, uncertainty, and hope.

Upon his arrival, Archbishop Daniel was warmly welcomed by the clergy and faithful of the parish. Among those greeting the archpastor were Very Rev. Fr. Oleh Kovalenko, Dean the Eastern Deanery of the Eparchy, as well as Rev. Fr. Alexander Smoktynowicz, Dean of the Southern Deanery of the Eparchy as well as Fr. Ivan Kunyk of the Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Krefeld. Their presence reflected the spirit of brotherhood and cooperation that characterizes Orthodox life in the diaspora.

The evening unfolded with the solemn celebration of Great Vespers, prayerfully served in both Ukrainian and German, reflecting the living reality of the Church in Germany, where Orthodox faithful strive to preserve their spiritual and cultural heritage while also becoming part of the societies in which they now live. The chanting of the psalms and hymns filled the temple with reverence, lifting the hearts of the faithful toward God as they stood together in prayer.

At the conclusion of the service, Archbishop Daniel addressed the gathered faithful in both English and Ukrainian, speaking with the warmth of a spiritual father to his beloved flock. He acknowledged the steadfast members of the parish who have sustained the life of the community for many years, while also extending heartfelt pastoral care to the many new parishioners who have arrived during the difficult years of war.

Reflecting on the spiritual journey of the Church during the Second Week of Great and Holy Lent, the archpastor reminded the faithful that Lent is not merely a season of restraint, but a sacred pilgrimage of the soul.

“Great Lent,” he said, “is a journey of the heart toward the living God. It invites us to rediscover who we truly are - children of the Heavenly Father, called to live in vigilance, prayer, repentance, and love. Through humility and perseverance, the Lord heals our wounds and restores our hope.”

Archbishop Daniel encouraged the faithful not to lose heart amid the trials of displacement, reminding them that the Church remains a living sanctuary of God’s grace.

“Even when we are far from the towns and villages where we were born, we are never far from God,” he reflected. “Wherever the faithful gather in prayer, there the Church lives, and there Christ Himself walks among His people.”

As the faithful listened attentively, many faces reflected a profound mixture of gratitude, longing, and spiritual consolation. For many who had endured the pain of leaving their homeland, the presence of their archpastor brought a deep sense of reassurance and belonging.

Following the service, the faithful remained in the church for a long time, eager to receive the personal blessing of their archpastor. Families approached him with reverence and joy, sharing stories of the towns and villages from which they had come, recounting the hardships they had endured and the hopes they carried for the future.

Some asked for prayers for loved ones still suffering in Ukraine. Others sought blessings for healing for those who were ill, or guidance for the uncertain paths of life that lay ahead. The temple became not merely a place of prayer, but a living space of pastoral encounter — where the wounds of exile met the healing presence of the Church.

Children gathered near the archpastor for photographs, while elders spoke quietly of their memories of home. In those moments, the parish truly revealed itself as a family of faith, united not by geography but by the grace of God and the shared heritage of the Orthodox faith.

Before departing from Krefeld, Archbishop Daniel expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Soroka and his wife Natalia, thanking them for their dedication, sacrificial love, and unwavering pastoral care for the Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in the region. Through their tireless service, the parish has become a beacon of hope and spiritual stability for many who arrived in Germany seeking safety and a new beginning.

The visit concluded with a message of encouragement and hope.

“Our people have carried their faith through centuries of trials,” Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful. “Empires have risen and fallen, wars have come and gone, yet the light of Christ has never been extinguished in the hearts of our people. Hold firmly to your faith, remain united in love, and walk the Lenten journey with prayer and hope - for Christ is with us, and in Him every sorrow is transformed into resurrection.”

As the archpastor departed from Krefeld, the faithful returned to their homes strengthened in spirit, carrying with them the blessing of their shepherd and the renewed assurance that even in a foreign land, the Church remains their home, their refuge, and their living connection to God and to one another.

У гостинному місті Крефельд, Німеччина, де протягом останніх років багато українських родин знайшли прихисток, вірні Української Православної парафії Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці зібралися з глибоким очікуванням і духовною радістю, щоб привітати свого архіпастиря і духовного батька - Його Високопреосвященство архієпископа Даниїла Західноєвропейської єпархії Української Православної Церкви в діаспорі.

Парафія, яка значно зросла протягом останніх років унаслідок прибуття українських родин, вимушено переміщених через війну після російського вторгнення в Україну, стала справжнім духовним домом для тих, хто шукає молитви, розради та відчуття приналежності далеко від рідної землі. Вечір розпочався урочистим звершенням Великої вечірні, яка молитовно звершувалася українською та німецькою мовами, відображаючи живу реальність Церкви в Німеччині, де православні вірні прагнуть зберігати свою духовну та культурну спадщину, водночас стаючи частиною суспільств, у яких вони тепер живуть. Спів псалмів і церковних гімнів наповнив храм благоговінням, підносячи серця вірних до Бога, коли вони разом стояли в молитві.

Після завершення богослужіння архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до присутніх англійською та українською мовами, промовляючи з теплотою духовного батька до своєї улюбленої пастви. Він подякував давнім членам парафії, які протягом багатьох років підтримують життя громади, а також висловив щиру пастирську турботу про нових парафіян, які прибули до громади в складні роки війни.

Роздумуючи над духовним шляхом Церкви під час другого тижня Великого і Святого посту, архіпастир нагадав, що піст - це не лише час стриманості, але й священне паломництво душі.

«Великий піст, - зазначив він, - це подорож серця до Живого Бога. Він запрошує нас наново відкрити, ким ми є насправді - дітьми Небесного Отця, покликаними жити в пильності, молитві, покаянні та любові. Через смирення і наполегливість Господь зцілює наші рани та відновлює нашу надію.»

Архієпископ Даниїл закликав вірних не втрачати надії серед випробувань вимушеного переселення, нагадуючи, що Церква завжди залишається живим осередком Божої благодаті.

«Навіть коли ми далеко від міст і сіл, де народилися, ми ніколи не далекі від Бога, - сказав він. - Там, де вірні збираються на молитву, там живе Церква, і там Сам Христос перебуває серед Свого народу.»

Коли вірні уважно слухали слова свого архіпастиря, на їхніх обличчях відображалася глибока суміш вдячності, туги за рідним краєм і духовної втіхи. Для багатьох, хто пережив біль розлуки з батьківщиною, присутність їхнього архіпастиря принесла відчуття справжньої підтримки та духовної близькості.

Після богослужіння вірні ще довго залишалися в храмі, прагнучи отримати особисте благословення свого архіпастиря. Родини підходили до нього з благоговінням і радістю, розповідаючи історії про міста й села, звідки вони прибули, ділячись труднощами, які пережили, та надіями, які несуть у серці на майбутнє.

Одні просили молитов за рідних, які залишаються в Україні. Інші просили благословення для зцілення тих, хто хворіє, або духовної підтримки у складних життєвих обставинах. Храм у ці хвилини став не лише місцем молитви, але й простором справжньої пастирської зустрічі - де рани вигнання зустрічалися з цілющою присутністю Церкви.

Діти збиралися біля архіпастиря для спільних фотографій, а старші парафіяни тихо ділилися спогадами про рідний край. У ці моменти парафія справді відкривалася як родина віри, об’єднана не географією, а благодаттю Божою та спільною спадщиною православної віри.

Перед від’їздом із Крефельда архієпископ Даниїл висловив щиру вдячність високопреподобному о. Володимиру Сороці та його дружині Наталії, подякувавши їм за відданість, жертовну любов та невтомну пастирську турботу про українських православних вірних у цьому регіоні. Завдяки їхньому служінню парафія стала справжнім маяком надії та духовної стабільності для багатьох людей, які прибули до Німеччини в пошуках безпеки та нового початку.

Візит завершився словами підбадьорення і надії.

«Наш народ проніс свою віру через століття випробувань, - нагадав архієпископ Даниїл. - Імперії приходили і зникали, війни починалися і закінчувалися, але світло Христа ніколи не згасало в серцях нашого народу. Тримайтеся міцно своєї віри, залишайтеся єдиними в любові і проходьте шлях Великого посту з молитвою та надією - бо Христос з нами, і в Ньому кожна скорбота перетворюється на воскресіння.»

Коли архіпастир залишав Крефельд, вірні поверталися до своїх домівок духовно зміцненими, несучи з собою благословення свого пастиря та нове усвідомлення того, що навіть на чужині Церква залишається їхнім домом, притулком і живим зв’язком із Богом та одне з одним.
