The faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox parish community in Dusseldorf, Germany, experienced a day of profound spiritual joy and inspiration as they welcomed their archpastor and spiritual father, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora, for the celebration of the Second Sunday of Great and Holy Lent - the Sunday of Saint Gregory Palamas.

From the early hours of the morning, the parish grounds were filled with a sense of anticipation. Representatives of the Parish Board of Administration, together with many faithful families, gathered at the entrance of the temple to greet their archpastor. In a particularly touching moment, the children of the parish community approached Archbishop Daniel with a bouquet of tulips - the early flowers of spring, known to be among the archpastor’s favorites. The delicate blossoms, symbols of renewal and hope, reflected both the beauty of the Lenten season and the warmth with which the parish family welcomed their shepherd.

As the weather itself seemed to echo the joy of the day, the faithful greeted their archpastor with the traditional Ukrainian words of welcome, expressing gratitude for his pastoral love and presence among them.

On behalf of the parish community, Mr. Markian Ostapchuk (son of protopresbyter Anfir Ostapchuk of blessed memory) addressed the archpastor with heartfelt words, welcoming Archbishop Daniel to Dusseldorf for what many considered a historic visit. He reflected that the last time a hierarch of the Church had visited the parish was during the ministry of his predecessor, His Eminence Archbishop Anatoliy of blessed memory, who had served the community many years earlier.

Entering the temple, Archbishop Daniel was greeted by the pastor of the parish community, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Halimurka, who asked the archpastor for his prayers for the faithful as they journey through the sacred season of Great Lent. Responding with joy and fatherly warmth, Archbishop Daniel expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to visit the parish and to follow in the footsteps of the hierarchs who had shepherded the faithful before him.

He reminded those gathered that the church in Dusseldorf has been a spiritual refuge for generations of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians.

“For more than eighty years,” the archpastor reflected, “the Eparchy of our Church and this holy temple has been a place where thousands of faithful have lifted their prayers to God - far from the towns and villages of their homeland, yet never far from the loving presence of Christ.”

He recalled how the first Ukrainian faithful came to Germany during the tragedy of the Second World War, and how today a new generation of Ukrainians has once again found refuge in the same land due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“History has placed many trials before our people,” Archbishop Daniel said. “Yet wherever Ukrainians have carried their faith, the Church has become their home - a place of prayer, healing, and hope.”

The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by a number of clergy of the Western European Eparchy, who had traveled from Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, and other parts of Germany and Belgium in order to pray together with their archpastor and the faithful of the community. Their presence reflected the unity of the Church in the diaspora and the shared pastoral mission of serving the spiritual needs of the faithful scattered throughout Europe.

Following the Gospel reading for the Second Sunday of Great Lent, which recounts the healing of the paralytic whose friends brought him to Christ, Archbishop Daniel delivered a deeply inspirational sermon reflecting on the meaning of living faith.

“The Gospel tells us that when the Lord saw the faith of the friends of the paralytic, He healed the man,” the archpastor said. “It was not only the suffering man’s faith that brought healing, but the faith of those who loved him enough to carry him to Christ.”

He reminded the faithful that true faith is not merely something professed with words, but something lived through actions of love and compassion.

“It is one thing to come to church, to light candles, and to fulfill the outward practices of our faith,” he said. “But it is far more challenging - and far more meaningful - to live our faith every day in the world around us.”

In a society where Orthodox Christians often find themselves surrounded by secular influences, the archpastor encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast witnesses of Christ through their daily lives.

“Let your faith be alive in every action you take,” he urged. “When people see kindness, patience, forgiveness, and compassion in your lives, they see the light of Christ shining through you.”

Archbishop Daniel also spoke about the true meaning of fasting during Great Lent.

“If fasting is only about refraining from meat, dairy, or certain foods, then we have not yet understood its purpose,” he explained. “True fasting must be joined with repentance, forgiveness, charity, and love. Without these, fasting becomes only a ritual - but with them, it becomes a path that leads our hearts back to God.”

The archpastor called upon the faithful to examine their hearts during the Lenten journey.

“Great Lent invites us to rediscover who we truly are - children of the Heavenly Father. Through prayer, humility, and acts of mercy, our wounded hearts are healed and renewed.”

As the Divine Liturgy continued, the spiritual unity of the community became especially visible when nearly one hundred faithful approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, strengthening themselves for the continued journey through Great Lent.

The parish choir prayerfully led the faithful in the sacred hymns of the Liturgy, filling the temple with a sense of reverence and spiritual beauty.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Fr. Michael, the pastor of the parish, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Archbishop Daniel for his archpastoral visit and for the spiritual encouragement he offered to the community. He also thanked the visiting clergy who had traveled from across Germany to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy.

In a moment that deeply touched the hearts of those present, the entire congregation joined the choir in singing the beloved prayer: “God Bless Ukraine.”

Following the service, Archbishop Daniel remained in the temple for a long time, offering his blessings to the faithful and listening to their prayer requests. Many parishioners approached their archpastor seeking prayers for loved ones who remained in Ukraine, for healing for those who were ill, and for guidance in the challenges of building a new life in a foreign land.

Later, the parish community gathered for a festive Lenten luncheon, where clergy and faithful shared fellowship and conversation, celebrating both the Second Sunday of Great Lent and the long-awaited visit of their archpastor.

As Archbishop Daniel prepared to depart, many parishioners approached him once more, asking him to return again and again to bless the parish with his presence and prayers.

The archpastor assured them that the Church remains always close to her faithful children.

“Wherever you live,” he said, “never forget that Christ walks with you. The Church is not only a building - it is the living community of believers who carry the love of God into the world.”

And so the faithful of Dusseldorf departed from the temple strengthened in spirit, reminded that even far from their homeland, they remain united in faith, hope, and love - as one family in Christ.

Вірні української православної парафіяльної громади у Дюссельдорфі, Німеччина, пережили день глибокої духовної радості та натхнення, коли вітали свого архіпастиря і духовного батька - Його Високопреосвященство архієпископа Даниїла Західноєвропейської єпархії Української Православної Церкви в діаспорі - з нагоди святкування Другої неділі Великого і Святого посту - Неділі святителя Григорія Палами.

Від ранніх ранкових годин подвір’я парафії було сповнене особливого очікування. Представники Парафіяльної ради управління, разом із багатьма родинами вірних, зібралися біля входу до храму, щоб привітати свого архіпастиря. Особливо зворушливим моментом стало те, коли діти парафіяльної громади підійшли до архієпископа Даниїла з букетом тюльпанів - ранніх весняних квітів, які є одними з улюблених квітів владики. Ці ніжні квіти, символи оновлення і надії, відображали як красу постового періоду, так і теплоту, з якою парафіяльна родина зустрічала свого пастиря.

Наче сама погода віддзеркалювала радість цього дня, вірні зустрічали архіпастиря традиційними українськими словами привітання, висловлюючи вдячність за його пастирську любов і присутність серед них.

Від імені парафіяльної громади до архіпастиря звернувся п. Маркіян Остапчук (син протопресвітера Анфіра Остапчука блаженної пам’яті – довголітнього настоятеля громади), який щирими словами привітав архієпископа Даниїла з візитом, який багато хто назвав історичним. Він нагадав, що востаннє ієрарх Церкви відвідував парафію ще за служіння його попередника - блаженної пам’яті архієпископа Анатолія, багато років тому.

Увійшовши до храму, архієпископа Даниїла привітав настоятель парафії протоієрей Михаїл Галімурка, який попросив архіпастиря про молитви за парафіян на їхньому духовному шляху під час священного періоду Великого посту. З радістю та батьківською теплотою архієпископ Даниїл подякував за можливість відвідати парафію та йти слідами тих архіпастирів, які служили цьому народові раніше.

Він нагадав присутнім, що храм у Дюссельдорфі протягом багатьох десятиліть був духовним притулком для поколінь українських православних християн.

«Понад вісімдесят років, - зазначив архіпастир, - єпархія нашої Церкви та цей святий храм були місцем, де тисячі вірних підносили свої молитви до Бога - далеко від міст і сіл рідної землі, але ніколи далеко від люблячої присутності Христа.»

Він згадав, як перші українські вірні прибули до Німеччини під час трагедії Другої світової війни, і як сьогодні нове покоління українців знову знайшло прихисток у цій землі через триваюче російське вторгнення в Україну.

«Історія поставила перед нашим народом багато випробувань, - сказав архієпископ Даниїл. - Але де б українці не несли свою віру, там Церква ставала їхнім домом - місцем молитви, зцілення і надії.»

Архієрейська Божественна Літургія була звершена у співслужінні духовенства Західноєвропейської єпархії, яке прибуло з Берліна, Мюнхена, Дюссельдорфа та інших міст Німеччини і Бельгії, щоб разом молитися зі своїм архіпастирем і вірними громади. Їхня присутність стала свідченням єдності Церкви в діаспорі та спільної пастирської місії служіння духовним потребам вірних, розсіяних по всій Європі.

Після читання Євангелія Другої неділі Великого посту, яке розповідає про зцілення розслабленого, якого його друзі принесли до Христа, архієпископ Даниїл виголосив натхненну проповідь про значення живої віри.

«Євангеліє говорить нам, що коли Господь побачив віру друзів розслабленого, Він зцілив його, - сказав архіпастир. - Це була не лише віра самого хворого, але й віра тих, хто настільки його любив, що приніс його до Христа.»

Він нагадав вірним, що справжня віра - це не лише слова, але життя, наповнене любов’ю і співчуттям.

«Одне - прийти до храму, поставити свічку і виконати зовнішні обряди нашої віри, - сказав владика. - Але набагато важче і водночас значно важливіше - жити вірою щодня у світі, який нас оточує.»

У суспільстві, де православні християни часто опиняються серед секулярних впливів, архіпастир закликав вірних бути живим свідченням Христа у своєму щоденному житті.

«Нехай ваша віра буде живою в кожній вашій дії. Коли люди бачать у вашому житті доброту, терпіння, прощення і співчуття, вони бачать світло Христа, що сяє через вас.»

Архієпископ Даниїл також говорив про справжній сенс посту під час Великого посту.

«Якщо піст полягає лише у відмові від м’яса, молочних чи інших продуктів, то ми ще не зрозуміли його справжнього змісту, - пояснив він. - Справжній піст повинен поєднуватися з покаянням, прощенням, милосердям і любов’ю. Без цього піст стає лише обрядом - але разом із цими чеснотами він стає шляхом, який веде наші серця до Бога.»

Архіпастир закликав вірних уважно дослідити свої серця під час постового шляху.

«Великий піст запрошує нас наново відкрити, ким ми є - дітьми Небесного Отця. Через молитву, смирення і діла милосердя наші поранені серця зцілюються і відновлюються.»

Упродовж Божественної Літургії духовна єдність громади особливо проявилася тоді, коли майже сто вірних приступили до Святої Чаші, щоб прийняти Тіло і Кров Христові, зміцнюючись для подальшої подорожі Великого посту.

Парафіяльний хор молитовно провадив спів священних гімнів Літургії, наповнюючи храм атмосферою благоговіння та духовної краси.

Наприкінці Божественної Літургії о. Михаїл, настоятель парафії, висловив щиру вдячність архієпископу Даниїлу за його архіпастирський візит та духовне підбадьорення, яке він подарував громаді. Він також подякував духовенству, яке прибуло з різних міст Німеччини для співслужіння Літургії.

У зворушливий момент вся громада разом із хором виконала улюблену молитву: «Боже, Великий, Єдиний».

Після богослужіння архієпископ Даниїл ще довго залишався у храмі, благословляючи вірних та вислуховуючи їхні молитовні прохання. Багато парафіян підходили до свого архіпастиря, просячи молитов за рідних, які залишилися в Україні, за зцілення для хворих та за підтримку у труднощах будування нового життя на чужині.

Пізніше парафіяльна громада зібралася на святкову пісну трапезу, де духовенство і вірні могли розділити братнє спілкування, святкуючи Другу неділю Великого посту та довгоочікуваний візит свого архіпастиря.

Коли архієпископ Даниїл готувався від’їжджати, багато парафіян знову підходили до нього, просячи повернутися ще не раз і благословити парафію своєю присутністю та молитвами.

Архіпастир запевнив їх, що Церква завжди залишається поруч зі своїми вірними дітьми.

«Де б ви не жили, ніколи не забувайте, що Христос іде поруч із вами. Церква - це не лише будівля; це жива спільнота віруючих, які несуть любов Божу у світ.»

Так вірні Дюссельдорфа залишали храм духовно зміцненими, пам’ятаючи, що навіть далеко від рідної землі вони залишаються єдиними у вірі, надії та любові - як одна родина у Христі.
