His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, President of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, participated in a special meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and representatives and leaders of the Ukrainian-American community in New York City.

The gathering took place during President Zelenskyy’s visit to New York in connection with the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly and a series of diplomatic meetings focused on Ukraine, international security, and efforts toward ending Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

Archbishop Daniel represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the UOC of the USA. He was accompanied by the Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasaks, Executive assistant to the Council of Bishops of the UOC of the USA and Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Muzychka of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in New York, NY and joined friends and leaders of the Ukrainian American organizations with which the UOC of the USA has maintained a longstanding relationship of pastoral cooperation and shared service to the Ukrainian-American community.

Prior to the community gathering, Archbishop Daniel also had an opportunity for a brief exchange with representatives of the Ukrainian government concerning the humanitarian and pastoral work undertaken by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Archbishop reiterated the Church’s continuing commitment to assisting wounded defenders, displaced families, children, the elderly, medical institutions, and other vulnerable people throughout Ukraine.

During the meeting with the Ukrainian-American community, President Zelenskyy spoke about Ukraine’s current diplomatic efforts, his engagement with President of the United States Donald Trump and the American administration, and the principal challenges facing Ukraine at this stage of the war. The President had previously identified the peace track as Ukraine’s highest priority and emphasized that his discussions with the American side included possible measures for de-escalation and questions of energy and human security.

According to the official Office of the President of Ukraine, the New York gathering began with a moment of silence honoring all those whose lives have been taken by the war. President Zelenskyy told those assembled that ending the war remains the most important issue facing Ukraine, together with preserving the Ukrainian nation and the country for future generations.

The President also addressed the possibility of an energy ceasefire. He stated that Ukraine is prepared for reciprocal measures concerning energy infrastructure and pointed to the significant impact Ukrainian defensive operations have had on Russia’s oil-refining capacity. The broader diplomatic discussions taking place in New York have similarly focused on reciprocal restraint concerning energy infrastructure as one possible avenue toward de-escalation.

For Archbishop Daniel, participation in the gathering was another opportunity to affirm the presence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA within the broader Ukrainian-American community and to express the Church’s solidarity with the suffering people of Ukraine.

“Our presence here is first and foremost a presence of prayer, solidarity and service,” Archbishop Daniel reflected. “For more than four years of this terrible full-scale war, our clergy and faithful throughout the United States have prayed, sacrificed and worked tirelessly for the people of Ukraine. We pray for the day when the language of missiles and drones will finally be replaced by the language of a just and lasting peace - a peace that safeguards human life and permits the Ukrainian people to live freely in their God-given homeland.”

The Archbishop also emphasized the indispensable contribution of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States.

“The Ukrainian-American community has demonstrated extraordinary unity. Our churches, veterans, humanitarian organizations, cultural institutions and countless individual families have stood together. We may serve in different ways, but we are united by love for Ukraine and by concern for every human life affected by this war.”

The gathering took place amid intensive diplomatic activity surrounding Ukraine in New York. President Zelenskyy met with President Trump and other American and international leaders as Ukraine continued to press for diplomatic progress, stronger protection of its population, and measures capable of bringing the war to an end.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA remains steadfast in prayer for the people of Ukraine, for those defending their homeland, for the wounded and displaced, for the families who mourn, and for all who labor for a just and lasting peace.

May Almighty God protect Ukraine, strengthen her suffering people, comfort those who mourn, and grant wisdom to all who carry the responsibility of seeking peace.
