NEW YORK, NY - September 26, 2026 - His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, President of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, represented the Church at the second annual Beacon of Hope Award Dinner, held at Casa Cipriani in New York City and hosted by St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine. The evening honored the courage and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people and recognized the leadership of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during Ukraine’s continuing struggle against Russia’s invasion.

Archbishop Daniel attended the gathering with the blessing and prayerful support of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. He was joined by the Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Shak, pastor of St. Panteleimon Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Brooklyn, New York. Their presence offered a visible witness to the solidarity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA with the suffering people of Ukraine and reflected the longstanding bonds of fellowship between the Ukrainian and Greek Orthodox communities in the United States.

The gathering was hosted by St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, the sacred church erected at Ground Zero as a living witness to faith, remembrance, resilience, and hope. The Beacon of Hope Award recognizes individuals whose lives and leadership embody courage, resilience, and moral clarity in the face of adversity. The National Shrine chose to honor President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people at a particularly meaningful moment, as the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary and the nation marks twenty-five years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The evening began on a distinctly Ukrainian note. Following the singing of the Ukrainian national anthem, Archbishop Daniel was invited to lead those assembled in the Lord’s Prayer in the Ukrainian language. In the midst of a distinguished gathering of Orthodox hierarchs, diplomats, civic leaders, philanthropists, and friends of Ukraine, the familiar words “Отче наш” became both a prayer and a testimony: a prayer for peace and a testimony to a nation that continues to place its hope in God even amid the destruction and suffering of war. The Orthodox Observer specifically noted Archbishop Daniel’s role in opening the evening with the Lord’s Prayer in Ukrainian.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America addressed the gathering and spoke forcefully about the deeper meaning of Ukraine’s struggle. He emphasized that Russia’s invasion is not simply a conflict over territory, but a confrontation involving freedom, human dignity, democracy, and the right of a people to determine their own future. Archbishop Elpidophoros praised the courage and determination demonstrated by the Ukrainian people while enduring continuing attacks from the air and on the ground.

Michael G. Psaros, Vice Chairman of St. Nicholas National Shrine, welcomed the guests and reflected upon the significance of presenting the Beacon of Hope Award to President Zelenskyy. He emphasized that the Ukrainian president’s commitment to his nation, his people, and the cause of freedom reflects the very spirit represented by St. Nicholas National Shrine - a sacred place born from tragedy that now stands as a witness to faith, resilience, and hope.

President Zelenskyy had originally been expected to receive the award personally, but the continuing demands of the war prevented his attendance. Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, accepted the award on his behalf. Ambassador Melnyk offered a sober assessment of the present danger facing Ukraine and appealed to the United States and the American people not to grow accustomed to Ukrainian suffering or to regard the extraordinary perseverance of Ukrainians as a substitute for meaningful international action. He described America itself as a historic “beacon of hope” and expressed his conviction that the American people continue to stand with Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.

The gathering also heard from Olga Rudnieva, co-founder of the Superhumans War Trauma Center, whose work provides prosthetics, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, and other critical assistance to Ukrainians wounded by the war. Speaking from the experience of those whose lives have been permanently altered by Russia’s aggression, Rudnieva challenged the international community to see Ukraine not merely as a nation capable of enduring suffering, but as an ambitious nation determined to rebuild, heal, and create a better future. The Superhumans network has grown to three centers with hundreds of staff serving those wounded by the war.

President Zelenskyy addressed those gathered through a video message. Reflecting upon the evening’s theme, the President spoke about hope as something that must be sustained through concrete acts of solidarity. He thanked those who continue to stand with the Ukrainian people and stressed the urgent importance of international assistance as Ukraine prepares to face another winter threatened by Russian attacks against its energy infrastructure. He particularly emphasized the importance of implementing agreements concerning air defense and the protection of Ukrainian civilians.

The evening also featured a special video greeting from His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who offered heartfelt words of encouragement to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine.

Addressing the President personally, His All-Holiness acknowledged the extraordinary burden of leadership he has carried throughout the years of war, noting that “the weight you have borne through these years is known to God,” while offering the prayer that the Almighty continue to grant him “strength, wisdom, and peace of heart.”

The Ecumenical Patriarch recalled that more than four and a half years have passed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale assault against Ukraine, while emphasizing that the wounds of aggression were inflicted years earlier. He prayerfully remembered those who have sacrificed their lives in defense of their homeland, as well as the physicians, chaplains, rescuers, and countless others who have courageously moved toward danger in order to save and serve their neighbors.

Concluding his message with words of spiritual solidarity addressed directly to the Ukrainian people, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew offered a powerful assurance: “The Church will not abandon you,” and renewed his appeal to the international community and all people of goodwill for “a genuine, just, and lasting peace” for Ukraine.

For Archbishop Daniel, the gathering carried a deeply pastoral meaning. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, under the spiritual leadership of Metropolitan Antony and Archbishop Daniel, has continually sought to accompany the Ukrainian people not only through words and prayer, but through tangible humanitarian assistance. Clergy, parishes, organizations, youth, and faithful throughout the United States have provided medical supplies, ambulances, vehicles, generators, food, clothing, assistance for displaced families and children, support for wounded soldiers and amputees, and aid for hospitals and communities throughout Ukraine.

The presence of Archbishop Daniel and Fr. Vasyl Shak at Casa Cipriani therefore represented more than ceremonial participation in a public event. It represented the prayers and sacrifices of generations of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians in America who cherish both their Ukrainian heritage and the freedoms they enjoy as Americans. It also demonstrated the conviction that Christians cannot remain indifferent when human dignity is violated, innocent lives are destroyed, and an entire nation is called upon to defend its freedom.

Reflecting upon the evening, Archbishop Daniel stated: “Ukraine today is defending more than the borders of our ancestral homeland. Our brothers and sisters are defending the God-given dignity of the human person, the freedom to live without fear, and the sacred right of a nation to determine its own future. As Ukrainian Americans, we know what America’s promise of liberty has meant to generations of our people, and therefore we must never become tired of speaking the truth about Ukraine. We must never become accustomed to the suffering of its people. We must continue to pray, to serve, to advocate, and to stand beside them.”

His Eminence continued: “The Ukrainian flag that flies today beside the American flag is not simply a symbol of two nations. For us, it is a reminder of a sacred friendship built upon freedom, sacrifice, and hope. We pray for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for the defenders of Ukraine, for the wounded, the displaced, the grieving, and especially for those who have given their lives so that others may live in freedom. May God protect Ukraine, strengthen her people, bless the United States of America for its friendship and support, and grant that the day soon come when the bells of our churches throughout Ukraine ring not in warning of missiles and drones, but in thanksgiving for a just and lasting peace. God bless Ukraine, and God bless the United States of America.”

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA expresses its gratitude to His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, the leadership and Board of Trustees of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, and all who organized the Beacon of Hope Dinner for keeping the suffering, courage, and aspirations of the Ukrainian people before the conscience of the American public. In a time when war fatigue threatens to diminish international attention, such gatherings affirm that Ukraine is not forgotten and that people of faith remain united in prayer and action for freedom, human dignity, justice, and peace.

Beacon of Hope»,
