Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Spring Valley, CA Celebrates 60th Anniversary of Ministry

On Sunday, the 17 of October, 2021, the local Ukrainian Orthodox community of the Protection of the Birth-Giver of God in Spring Valley, CA gathered for its Sunday prayer worship honoring the feast of Pokrova and the 60th anniversary of prayerful ministry.

Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, who was assisted by Very Rev. Fr. Myron Mykhayluk, pastor of the local community; Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl’s Sauciur, pastor of St. Volodymyr Pro-Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA and Dean of the Western Deanery of the UOC of the USA; Deacon Myroslav Mykytyuk of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ, who together with Subdeacon Pavlo Vysotskyi escorted the archbishop on his trip to the State of California.

During the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel (with blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony) awarded the pastor of the parish - Very Rev. Fr. Myron Mykhayluk with the ecclesiastical award - a miter. Fr. Myron has been caring for the spiritual flock of the parish community for the past 20 years and this year he entered into the 45th year of priestly service.

Vladyka Daniel reflected in his sermon on the ministry of the local parish community and called upon all gathered in the: “Be not afraid to challenge prejudice and false attitudes and ideas even of the society we live in... The least among us can be a vehicle that God can use to bring justice and healing to all of God's disadvantaged children all over the world.”

Archbishop mentioned the previous hierarchs and pastors, as their pastoral care for the Ukrainian Orthodox Christian flock was selflessly offered for the past 60 years since the foundation of the parish.

Following the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, Vladyka Daniel presented the following individuals with the religious awards of the UOC of the USA for their devotion to the ministry of the parish family:

Subdeacon Gary Gebet, Vera Skop, and Olga Chekanska - Blessed Hramotas

Nadia Skop, Lesia Belanger, and Dobrodijka Halyna Mykhaylyuk - Centennial Medals of the UOC of the USA.

Following the veneration of the icon of the Pokrova of the Mother of God, the faithful were invited to share in a wonderful meal prepared by the Sisterhood members in the parish hall.  Everyone in attendance sang “Mnohaya Lita” to the Sisterhood members, expressing their appreciation and love for their dedication and devotion to our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Following the meal, Vladyka Daniel endeavored to greet and speak with each person individually, as opportunity allowed. In particular, both Fr. Myron and Archbishop Daniel greeted the representatives of the local Ukrainian Catholic community, who along with Fr. Yurii Sas joined everyone in attendance for the prayerful parish anniversary celebration.

We would like to thank all the members of our parish for their manifold efforts to make this a memorable and enjoyable day in the life of our parish, and for their many special and on-going contributions to the well-being of our church.

We would like to thank all visitors to our parish for their prayers, efforts, and presence.  Finally we would like to thank the Ruling Hierarch of our Western Eparchy, Archbishop Daniel, for honoring all of us with his presence, prayers, blessings and gracious words.  May God Bless You Vladyko, and guide you in your efforts for His Holy Vineyard!
